Ya llegó el inicio del año escolar….¡y ya somos los más grandes de Oak Terrace!  Con este honor viene la responsabilidad de ser líderes de nuestra escuela y de prepararnos para entrar al sexto grado.  Este sitio es un lugar en que podemos compartir ideas y recursos.  Cada dos semanas, queremos poner un reporte sobre lo que estamos haciendo en la clase.  Esperamos que disfruten los Fifth Grade Files!

The school year has started…..and now we’re the leaders of Oak Terrace!  With the honor of being the biggest and the best comes the responsibility to be role models for our school and to prepare ourselves for becoming middle schoolers.  This website is a place for us to share ideas and resources.  Every two weeks, we hope to post an update about what we’ve been doing in class.  We hope you enjoy the Fifth Grade Files!

Expanding Vocabulary

Posted on February 27, 2011 in Reading by ebrady

Our conversations and reading present us with hundreds of opportunities every day to expand our vocabulary to include new and interesting words.  Tune in and look out for these words. We have 4 major strategies for identifying the meaning of these new, interesting words.

1) The easiest and most effective strategy is often to ask somebody.

2) If that doesn’t work, try looking for word parts, cognates, or related words to help you infer the meaning.

3) If the word itself doesn’t provide enough clues, use the context clues in the sentence or paragraph to see if you can infer the meaning.

4) When all else fails, use a dictionary.  Read all the definitions, and determine which one seems most useful given the context in which the word was used.

Add your comments here to share new words you found, where you found them, and how you determined the meaning.

Geometry

Select two quadrilaterals from the list below:

trapezoid

parallelogram

rectangle

rhombus

square

Compare and contrast the two figures you have chosen.  What are the necessary features of each?  Are there any examples of figures that fit into both categories?  Use math vocabulary to make your answer specific and complete.

Esclavitud

Posted on February 27, 2011 in Estudios Sociales by ebrady

Tienes la oportunidad de hablar con un grupo de granjeros de Georgia en 1750.  Todos manejan plantaciones y cuentan con el apoyo de muchos esclavos.  ¿Cuáles argumentos podrías ofrecer para que entiendan la vida horrible que tienen los esclavos?  ¿Cómo podrías persuadirles que no es justo la esclavitud?

Strategic Reading

Posted on February 22, 2011 in Reading by ebrady

Share a strategy that you feel that you use very well.  Explain if it is a strategy for comprehension, accuracy, fluency, or expanding vocabulary. How do you do it?  How does it help you to understand?

Resources

Offer some suggestions for how a family could conserve Earth’s resources.  Explain whether your solutions involve reducing, reusing, or recycling.

Revolución Americana

Es el año 1775.  Le estás hablando a un gran grupo de colonos que no han decidido ser Patriota o Realista.  Dales un argumento persuasivo para un lado o el otro.

Discussion Threads

Posted on February 17, 2011 in Uncategorized by ebrady

Our newest adventure is underway!  Please click on the Forum tab at the top of our page to view rules for discussion threads.  Students are expected to comment on one thread every week.  Parents are invited to participate as well!  Aside from commenting on the prompt itself, feel free to respond to other messages with questions, elaborations, or arguments.

Happy posting!

Communication Challenge!

Posted on January 29, 2011 in Uncategorized by ebrady

5B has been doing some incredible learning….and been so busy doing it that we haven’t kept up with our monthly newsletters to summarize our activities.  We are going to explore how we can use our blog to communicate what we’re up to in class.  We have been devoting 20 minutes weekly to keyboarding practice and 2 additional hours weekly to technology-based learning.  Let’s apply this expertise to the goal of communicating what we’re learning.

Student Challenge:

Click on the Our News tab at the top of the page to read our essays.  Kids will post at least one short essay every month.  The essay should focus on something important that you’ve been learning.  It should include a short intro, a body paragraph, and a conclusion.  Your audience is the student/parent/teacher community of 5B and Oak Terrace.  See the Expository Writing Rubric for evaluation criteria.

Parent Challenge:

Parents will check the blog for updates on 5B’s learning.  Students will be able to earn bonus points by responding to conversation threads, so we invite you to enrich our discussions with a comment or question.

Teacher Challenge:

Mrs. Brady will be exploring the potential of this blog as a learning tool.  This is a new forum for me and I am excited to learn more about how to use this as more than a place to post links I love.  My aim is to post weekly updates and to include more and more features to increase communication and learning opportunities.  Advice welcome!

**Additional note: Friday a permission slip was sent home to grant permission to publish students’ initials, photos, videos, and school work.  Students who do not have a signed permission slip will contribute their essays in Word format for me to post on the blog, as we want to respect parents’ wishes regarding publication of student information.
